In June 2020, McKinsey commissioned a survey among 800 directors of enterprises around the world. They represented companies with various levels of revenues, from various industries, from countries such as the USA, Germany, France, Great Britain, India, Canada, Australia and China. The results indicate that the current crisis related to the COVID-19 will significantly accelerate some economic trends, including automation and digitization. This will entail many consequences, including greater demand for specialists from the above-mentioned fields.
All the limitations related to the occurrence of COVID-19 changed consumer behavior, which in turn forced companies to change the way they act. The main effect is the accelerated digitization of companies. The changes that have dragged on for months or even years so far had to be implemented in a few weeks. The vast majority of respondents to the McKinsey survey (85 percent), stated that their companies slightly or significantly accelerated the implementation of technologies enabling digital interaction and collaboration with employees.
In turn, half of the respondents pointed to the growing role of digital customer contact channels, such as e-commerce, mobile applications and chatbots. About 35 percent of the companies surveyed have further digitized their supply chains. Another important issue that has gained momentum in recent months is automation in the form of, i.e., robotics, autonomous vehicles and software based on artificial intelligence.
