As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of Poles using online shopping significantly increased and at the end of 2020 it was 36% - according to the report "Poles own wallet: shopping in the pandemic era" prepared by Santander Consumer Bank. However, within different age groups, this share varies considerably, reaching even 60% in some.
Of course, online channels are most popular among young people up to 30 years of age. However, older people are also looking more and more favorably towards online. We are also talking about groups of seniors who value online shopping mainly because it gives them a greater sense of security than a visit to a stationery store. According to a Santander study, during the pandemic, the number of online customers aged 60-69 increased by as much as 14 percent. This mainly applies to the largest Polish cities, where 46 percent. declared that it now buys online more often.
The increase in the share of online shopping in the Polish e-commerce market is also associated with a change in the method of payment. According to a study by Santander Consumer Bank, the most popular option is defined online transfers, such as PayU, Przelewy24, or Paybynet (34 percent). However, BLIK payments are also gaining more and more popularity (27%), which are most often used by the youngest Poles aged 18-29 (as much as 56% in this age group).
Every eighth online customer pays by credit card (13%), which is a popular choice especially among people over 40 (21%) and metropolitan residents (19%). Nevertheless, a significant percentage of buyers (32%) are still faithful to the old method of cash on delivery. Most often they are people over 50 (44%).
